Fitness Streaming Services - The Hard Facts

Media buzz can make it seem like streaming fitness services are the next big thing, but the data says otherwise.

Only about a third of consumers are using audio or video streaming to work out, and the vast majority of them are also working out at gyms like Peak Zone Fitness, according to a survey by MindBody, the leading tech platform for the fitness industry.

Why invest thousands of dollars in a fancy Peloton bike and pay a monthly subscription fee to stream workouts but still go to a health club?

Because people crave social contact, which is, after all, an important part of feeling good.

Most Peloton users (70 percent) also hit the gym because they want to feel connected to their community, exercise with a friend, and participate in group fitness, the MindBody survey shows.

In fact, the majority of them are going to a wider variety of studio classes than they did before using Peloton at home, the survey shows.

In any case, the digital fitness market is still in its infancy.

Only 11 percent of survey respondents actually purchased at-home fitness equipment with streaming capability. Of those, 31 percent invested in Peloton, 17 percent have Mirror, 8 percent use NordicTrack, 6 percent own a Stairmaster, 4 percent have Peloton Treadmill, and 1 percent do Hydrow.
